Adele - Hello

The Killers - Mr. Brightside

  • 'Hello' by Adele is a unique music video from its genre, this is purely because of the mise-en-scene and soundtrack.

  • The music video heavily involves performance which is conventional to a music video, however there are also elements of the story whereby another character is talking over her. This is unconventional as generally the artist wants the audience to solely focus on the lyrics and her performance.

  • It is filmed all in a 'sepia' tint which makes a cold and old representation which isn't often used in music videos however the effect suits the genre in this instance.

  • I cannot see 'Hello' by Adele helping me in ideas for my music video as I am using a song from a different genre.

  • 'Mr. Brightside' by The Killers is a song from the indie-rock genre which is beneficial for me as we are planning on creating a music video from this genre.

  • Mr Brightside heavily relies on the performance as the camera shots constantly cut back to the performer. This is important in a music video from this genre as the audience enjoy to see the performer singing.

  • The location is the same (a stage/ set) which makes me as a viewer feel as though the music video is like a show or a gig, making the audience feel as though they are live watching The Killers perform.

  • I feel some aspects of this music video could be helpful for me such as the performance shots as there are multiple different angles to display power.

X Ambassadors, Jamie N Commons - Jungle

  • 'Jungle' by X Ambassadors is a well constructed music video in my opinion as it shows a contrast between two different social groups successfully.

  • In order to show two different social groups X Ambassadors used a technique knows as cross-cutting and different camera angles to show difference in power.

  • There wasn't a large amount of performance compared to 'Hello' by Adele and is more based around the storyline of the song.

  • For me I feel as though this music video is useful to me as I would like to make a music video which is more meaning based than performance due to the effect is gives to the audience.

  • The mise-en-scene within this piece is well thought out as the codes of dress are a large factor as to why we realise the two different social groups. As well as codes of dress the lighting is well produced and sets the overall mood.

Gym Class Heroes - The Fighter

  • 'The Fighter' by Gym Class Heroes is a motivational music video to inspire those who are struggling through tough times.

  • It is like the performers are narrating the characters life as he fails at multiple gymnastic tricks, however at the end of the music video the gymnast becomes successful.

  • The message behind this music video is to show that failure leads to success and that you cannot give up.

  • The reason this music video is so successfully produced is because of the cross-cutting between the character when he was a kid and the performer. This easily allows the audience to realise the performer is telling a story about someone and to influence the story on to others.

  • This music video is very beneficial to me as I want my music video to have the same effect, of the performer narrating a weak characters life/ struggles.

Linkin Park - Bleed It Out

  • 'Bleed it out' by Linkin Park was an extremely popular music video in 2007 due to the fact that is was all filmed in 1 take. This involves extremely good synchronicity of each performer/ character.

  • In my opinion the 1 long shot suited the music video well even though the tempo of the song was fast. This is because of the camera movement and angles that were used. They were extremely creative and made it enjoying to watch as a viewer.

  • The music video is set on a stage to emphasise the performance aspect as the artists want the audience to be able to relate with them.

  • This has influenced me to want to make a 1 take music video, however it would be extremely difficult with a small budget and less talented performers.

Imagine Dragons - It's Time

Alan Walker - Faded

  • 'It's Time' by Imagine Dragons doesn't include a lot of performance, it is mainly cinematography and mise-en-scene which are the key aspects of the production.

  • The first shot of the music video was a slow track backwards to show the performers of the band. This shot was extremely long in order to allow the audience to recognise the artists so they can relate with them.

  • We then see many extreme long shots of them walking through a what seems desert with a strong dark blue tint to give the effect of loneliness. With the broken bridge in the background this supports this representation successfully - however I feel as a viewer that the music video was boring and too slow, the cuts need to be faster to produce energy.

  • This music didn't help me for ideas in my music video as it bored me due to the slow cuts. It has taught me to frequently change the speed of the cuts throughout my production to create energy.

  • 'Faded' by Alan Walker has no performance aspect to the music video which I feel as though is very impressive, this is because the artist can tell a story through footage without 'narrating' it.

  • The effect of no performance aspect also makes the audience listen closer to the lyrics of the artist and this creates allows the viewer to create a link between the character and lyrics.

  • We never see the true identity of the lonely character in this music video however he is successfully represented as weak and powerless, this is due to the dark/ grey tint used and the camera angles.

  • In my opinion I feel as though this music video was successful however it could be confused with a short film/ advertisement to a homeless organisation.

  • I will use some techniques used in this music video to emphasise that my character is homeless, weak and lonely such as dark, grey tints and a variety of different camera angles. Specifically high angle shots.
