Greek Tragedy - The Wombats

'Greek Tragedy' is an extremely unique music video in terms of narrative and performance from the Indie-Rock genre. The generic storyline of this song is about a crazy fan of The Wombats who stalks the group members and has bizzare fetishes. Throughout the music video we see her filming the band in their own homes, instantly telling the audience she is obsessed with this band, we are also shown fast paced shots of her picking up items such as rope which foreshadows the end of the music video.

Throughout the music video there is a contrast between two different camera shots which we can instantly recognise due to the video quality. As you can see the shot above on the left the camera quality is very clear (professional) whereas the shot to the right is poorer quality and therefore the audience can distinguish between the female stalking the band members and the professionally filmed shots. The effect of cross-cutting between the two camera types is to give the audience two different persepctives, one from the eyes of the female character as she is stalking her idols, and the other shots are used to show the audience how she is preparing for the masacres.

The two different camera types also gives the female character a different personality/ appearance, as you can see in the photo on the left above she is represented to be happy as she has met her idols (the band members). This is also shown in the 3 photos below when she has a knitted sweater and a toaster. However when she is shown on the 'better' quality camera (to the right) we see that she is unhappy/ lonely. She is represented as lonely/ isolated due to the high angle and the lighting which clearly demonstrates to the audience that she isn't normal (stands out from the crowd).

Throughout the music video the female character 'vlogs' (Video Logs) herself and she shows us things she has bought/ made for the band members. As you can see in the screenshot on the left she is holding up a sweater with 'Dan' written on it, we instantly think that this is a kind gesture. We are shown her knitting Dan a new sweater as earlier in the music video she bumps into him, causing him to spill coffee over himself. The shot in the middle is of her holding a toaster that she has bought for Matthew, this is because when she was 'stalking' him at his house we see his toaster is broken - again making us, the audience feel as though she is making a kind gesture for Matthew.
However nearing the end of the music video she in fact murders the band members with these items - she stabs Dan with the knitting needles which she used to knit the sweater, and for Matthew he was in the bath and she murders him by dropping a live toaster into the bath - electricuting him.

One of the final shots in the music video is of the 3 band members tied up as rag dolls (the screenshots below). This shot represents crazy fans and what some people would go to the extent of doing in order to meet their idols. The shot to the right is a long shotof the band members and the female character, in this shot they are light up together giving the effect they are/ were 'together' whereas the female character is low-key lit, representing her to be isolated yet powerful as her full identity isn't shown
